Quality
This year has seen the line between hip hop's two extremes become blurrier than ever, an event Talib Kweli sums up while describing his second solo album: "It ain't commercial or underground/It's true." That's an easy claim to make, but the appropriately-titled contents of Quality bear it out; few MCs have ever attempted such a simultaneous appeal to the street and the coffeehouse. Of course, the well-read and politically active Kweli has always been a favorite of the latter crowd, but here he manages a harder edge without completely sacrificing credibility.
The dancehall-tinged "Gun Music" salutes the power of the pistol, but only to "protect the fam," while "Put It In The Air" finds Kweli low-riding with DJ Quik and loving it, as he defends his soft reputation. Yet while those reaches to the mainstream are impressive, gentle beats and deep thoughts still welcome him home. "What you gonna do when you have to face/The manifestation of the words that you put in space?" he asks one "studio gangsta" over the mournful jazz of "Where Do We Go." For Talib, the path seems clear: onwards and upwards.
